Because it sure isn’t the American market. Sorry for the bad picture, driver was pulling away.
EDIT: It’s a 2004 Canadian Toyota Echo RS. It could actually be this one:

“Now in its third generation, the name “Toyota Vitz” has been used consistently in Japan, with most international markets receiving the same vehicle under the Toyota Yaris name, or formerly as the Toyota Echo in some markets for the first generation.”

That’s what my research is leading me to believe.

I was kidding with you, it clearly says Echo on it. Probably Canada.

Someone owns one a few blocks from where I live...not sure how they got CA plates on it, but there it is and I believe it is legal...the DMV probably doesn’t even care that it’s not USDM since its like the only Echo/Yaris not sold in the US...

Canadian here, that is correct, the Toyota Echo came before (and eventually become) the Yaris in Canada. In fact, a guy on my football team during college had one in white; we used to baum around the college’s parking lot in it; it feel like it got to uncomfortably high speeds in very short distances (I imagine because it’s limits weren’t very high lol). Tonnes of fun; slow car fast.

I’ve always liked this generation of Echo (although not as big a fan of the center-gauges thing). I actually considered looking for one as a first car before I got my ‘02 Impreza 2.5TS wagon back in 2008 (which I sold in 2013), but got the Subie instead. They are very, very reliable and well built little cars! :)
